Wardog's successes, including their sinking of Yuktobania's submersible aircraft carrier Scinfaxi, turned the tide of the war in favor of Osea. Their presence in battle increased the morale of Osean forces whilst striking fear into the Yuktobanians. This earned them the attention of Albert Genette, an Osean journalist writing about Wardog who stayed at their island air base. The conflict was later revealed to be orchestrated by the "Grey Men", an ultranationalist paramilitary from Belka, a nation bitterly defeated in a war of aggression 15 years prior to the game's events. The Grey Men manipulated both nations into war, using false-flagged Osean and Yuktobanian aircraft operating from Belkan territory. The invasion exposed deep fractures within Yuktobania's command structure, revealing that the war was driven by the Grey Men's ambition rather than national necessity. The people of Osea and Yuktobania eventually became opposed to the war, and the two nations joined forces to defeat the Grey Men after Razgriz Squadron foiled their plans to attack both nations with nuclear weapons.

Wardog's successes, including their sinking of Yuktobania's submersible aircraft carrier Scinfaxi, turned the tide of the war in favor of Osea. During an ongoing mission, the 8492nd Squadron, an ostensibly allied Osean squadron operating nearby, attacked a civilian college in Yuktobania, and Wardog was framed for the attack. Wardog cleared their names by repelling Yuktobanian reprisal attacks and sinking a second Yuktobanian submersible carrier, the Hrimfaxi. During a flypast at an Osean political rally, a Yuktobanian ambush and interference from the 8492nd resulted in one of Wardog's pilots being killed. Wardog's suspicions were confirmed when unmarked aircraft ambushed the squadron during an aerial refueling which they narrowly escaped. Aided by Osean naval aviators from a friendly aircraft carrier, Wardog faked their deaths and reformed as the independent Razgriz Squadron. Razgriz rescued the Osean and Yuktobanian heads of state from captivity and found false-flagged Osean and Yuktobanian aircraft in Belkan territory, confirming the Grey Men conspiracy. Razgriz foiled the Grey Men's plans to attack Osea and Yuktobania with nuclear weapons, while Osea and Yuktobania joined forces to defeat the Grey Men. When the Grey Men hijacked an orbital weapons platform, Razgriz spearheaded an assault on their control facility, defeated the 8492nd, and destroyed the weapons platform itself when it was deliberately deorbited to impact the Osean capital, ending the war and restoring peace between Osea and Yuktobania.
